Men who hacked JAMB website, diverting N10 million plead for forgiveness

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says hackers recently gained access into its intranet site and altered the profiles of its ad hoc staff.






JAMB Registrar, Ishaq Oloyede, made this known on Tuesday while addressing journalists in Abuja.




He said over N10 million which was set aside as allowance for the ad hoc staff was diverted.




According to Oloyede, the board uncovered the fraud after a careful investigation, which led to the arrest of one Sahabi Zubairu from Takum in Taraba state, among several others.







On how the fraudsters gained access to the profiles, Oloyede explained that they used Key Logger, a software that allows access to the profile of anyone who has logged in using a public cybercafé even after the person has logged out and gone.







He said that the site wasn’t for application to become JAMB ad hoc staff, but for JAMB ad hoc staff to supply their account details and names for payment of their allowances.







Oloyede said Zubairu deleted the names of the original ad hoc staff and their telephone numbers and substituted them with his, adding that those affected include code numbers 313 and 312, among others.







He said that at least ten scammers paraded by JAMB before journalists on Tuesday, admitted to the crime and said they were lured into it by Zubairu.

Rio Ferdinand has sought to defend Donny van de Beek, with the Manchester United legend of the opinion that a Dutch midfielder should be playing a more prominent role at Old Trafford, but he still finds himself asking why a deal was done in the first place.

A highly-rated Netherlands international completed a £40 million ($55m) move from Ajax to a Premier League heavyweight during the summer transfer window of 2020.

He has taken in 27 appearances across all competitions this season, but only two of those outings have been top-flight starts and just one goal has been contributed to the collective cause.

Amid claims that Van de Beek is growing frustrated and could seek to bring his time in England to a close after just 12 months, United legend Ferdinand has told VIBE with FIVE: “I feel for him. I don't care who you are - if you're playing the odd two minutes here and there, three minutes here and there, you cannot perform. I don't care what level of player you are.

“I don't think he's been helped in terms of team selection and opportunities so I don't think it's fair to say he's underperforming because he's not been put in a position to perform yet on a consistent basis.

“I really do feel for him but it would be interesting to hear what he was sold and told on the way in because the lack of opportunities, I don't think he'd have come here if he'd known that.”

Ferdinand added: “I watched him a hell of a lot in the Champions League in the year they had a good run to the semi-finals, Ajax. 

“He was so impressive in the way he arrived in the box, the way he could play deeper as well and keep the ball, keep the game ticking. 

“I think he would add value to this team, definitely. He's someone who would create goals, he played a part in the goal (versus Leicester). When he gets in the box, he knows how to put the ball in the back of the net. 

“But to get in the box he's got to play in the position where Bruno Fernandes is playing and he's not going to do that. Can he do it from No.8 position or No.6 when he's holding? I think he can. He's intelligent enough. 

“Ajax players are brought up to be intelligent footballers, they are able to play multiple positions, he can do that. It's just obviously United want a stiffer central midfield area behind Bruno. 

“I get that, given that's got to be protecting the centre-backs and that's not going to be one of Van de Beek's strengths. But then it begs the question: why buy him then?”

Van de Beek has been accused of looking “lost” as he struggles to make the desired impact at United.

He was tied to a five-year contract upon his arrival at Old Trafford, but it remains to be seen whether that deal will be honoured.

Plenty have been calling on him to seek out another move at the earliest opportunity, with a highly-rated playmaker needing regular game time in order to fulfil his undoubted potential.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been calling for patience, with Van de Beek still part of his long-term plans, but there is only so long that those on the fringes can wait before their attention starts to drift elsewhere.

Roblox gamers must pay to die with an 'oof'

 

Fans of the hugely popular Roblox game may soon notice that a familiar noise has fallen silent in the game.

The "oof" sound that famously accompanies the death of characters will temporarily be removed, following a copyright dispute.

When it is reinstated, gamers will have to buy it, paying around around $1 (£0.76) or 100 in-game currency Robux.

The developer who originally created the sound for a game released 20 years ago, will get compensation.

Tommy Tallarico is now chief executive of gaming firm Intellivision Entertainment, but has 30 years experience in the industry as a music and sound producer.

When the similarity between the Roblox "oof" and the sound he made for action-adventure game Messiah was brought to his attention last year, he contacted the firm.

Under the settlement, he will also create a sound effect kit for Roblox which developers can use, with prices ranging from $10 to $250.

The financial details of the copyright case have not been shared.

He told the FOXTECH: "It's amazing to think that such a small sound I did over 20 years ago for a different video game ended up being one of the most iconic pop culture audio clips of the 21st century.

"I would hear kids saying it on playgrounds and didn't even realize that they were repeating something I had created over two decades ago.

"It was great that we were able to come to a resolution with Roblox and they were very accommodating of the situation. It's kind of funny to think that out of all the things I've done over my 32 years in the video game industry... that for a new generation of video game players, I'm now just known as the Oof guy."

Roblox is an open world game-creation system with around 100 million users, and is especially popular with children.

It is free to download but relies on in-app purchases, with in-game currency known as Robux.

A spokesperson for Roblox told the FOXTECH: "We worked together to find a fair resolution that allows Tommy to become part of the Roblox community.

"As part of our commitment towards UGC content, we will replace the platform's default 'game over' sound effect with a new audio track later this month.

"When our Developer Marketplace is available, people will also be able to choose community created sounds for platform-wide events."

EXCLUSIVE: COVID-19 Hits Queen’s College Lagos As Pupils Test Positive, Health Officials Collect Over 200 Samples

 The Queen’s College, Yaba, founded in 1927, is one of the oldest elite schools in the state, often referred to as the girls’ version of the King’s College. 

Some pupils of the Queen’s College, Yaba, Lagos State, have tested positive to COVID-19 while a few symptomatic others have been isolated at the school bay, according to information reaching SaharaReporters from multiple credible sources.

On Friday, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, led other health emergency officials to the school to collect the samples of about 200 pupils for COVID-19 tests, according to school teachers who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Some of our pupils were exposed to the virus, and they have symptoms. So, the state officials were called in to collect their samples. About six pupils had tested positive to the virus earlier, and they have been taken to a treatment facility in town,” a female teacher explained.

“All the pupils are the target for sampling. There are about 600. But on Friday, over 200 pupils’ samples have been taken by the officials. I don’t know how many pupils tested positive initially, but there are quite a number of them,” another top staff of the school added.

The Queen’s College, Yaba, founded in 1927, is one of the oldest elite schools in the state, often referred to as the girls’ version of the King’s College.

The Lagos State Government confirmed in a statement on Friday that pupils of “a public school” tested positive to the virus, although it chose not to name the school.

The statement reads in part, “Lagos State Government has confirmed positive COVID-19 cases in a secondary boarding school on the mainland. A member of the school’s staff was confirmed positive for COVID-19 on November 2.

“The staff member fell ill for a few days and received first aid at the school clinic. She subsequently tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, November 2 at the Lagos State Biobank. Steps are being taken to contain the spread within the school and reduce exposure to the outside community. All parents are being contacted first through the PTA, and a family zoom call is being arranged to allay their fears further.

“Students who test positive are to be isolated in the school premises and, if unwell, will be admitted to one of the accredited isolation centres in Lagos. Students are discouraged from going home to avoid infecting members of their families.

“Members of the Emergency Operation Center Lagos, NCDC and our counterparts in the Ministry of Education have been deployed in the school to provide strategic interventions and support. These include psychosocial support, infection prevention control, medical monitoring and risk communication experts to enlighten further affected people.”

The Queen’s College is not the first school where many pupils have been found positive to COVID-19 in the state.

On October 16, the government confirmed COVID-19 cases in a private boarding school in the Lekki area.

The health commissioner, Abayomi, had disclosed that 181 students and staff members at the private school tested positive to the virus, out of a total 441 school population.

After weeks of observed reduction in cases in Lagos State, the state had in the last week ben experiencing a surge, fuelling fears that a second wave of the virus was imminent.

The Lagos State Government only on Wednesday stressed the need for residents to strictly adhere to precautionary measures against COVID-19 infection to prevent the much-feared second wave.

The socio-economic implications of the virus, such as another lockdown are primarily the worry of most residents of the state.
